yucca in bloom

You can eat the yuccas! I have read that the flower and the fruit are edible, fresh or cooked. You can put the flowers in omelettes, soups, salads. I have tried to cook the yucca root as potatoes, they are really good steamed or roasted. The Yucca was a very important plant for Indians. The fiber was used to make ropes, nets, hats, shoes. Soap was made from the roots. Some species of birds and animals are dependant on the yucca and cannot survive without it.
California poppy became a Califofornia state flower in 1903. The 6th of April is a California poppy day. The plant was used by Indians both as a source of food and for its medicinal properties.
